Mary Dicks Sheridan Obituary

85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on 13 January, 2018 at Porter Hospice, Centennial, a caring and loving community.

Mary was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1932, and was raised in the Gallowgate, the second eldest of six siblings. She completed school at the age of 14, the Scottish state age, and started working and contributing her earnings to the household to assist her parents in supporting the family. As a young woman she worked for the Glasgow Corporation Tramways who were one of the first employees in the city to hire women as conductresses. These women founded one of Glasgow’s very own institutions - known as the ‘clippie’. Smartly turned out crews, dressed in neat military-style green uniforms, became a permanent feature for the remaining years of the service.

She met her husband John (aka Kirk) on their regular number nine tram route from Bridgeton to Auchenshuggle. He was the tram driver and she was the clippie. The young couple married in 1956 and raised their three children in Bridgeton until 1971. The family immigrated to the USA and settled in Littleton, Colorado.

Mary continued her career as a receptionist/greeter for several car dealerships in the greater Denver area, retiring from Rickenbaugh Cadillac Volvo after 25 years of service in 2005. During this time Mary became an American citizen.

She is survived by her sons Scott and John: daughter Karen Sheridan; two grandsons Finnegan and Jeff; granddaughter Avery; sisters Elizabeth (Betty) and Catherine; brother Hugh.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband John Dobbs Sheridan Sr., affectionately known as Kirk or Scottie; her parents William and Mary; brother William ‘Jack’; sister Janet.

Mary was fun to be with and had a wonderful sense of humour. She loved reading and always had a book at hand. She enjoyed dancing (at the Locarno in Glasgow), knitting, garage sales on a Saturday morning, and taking care of her home and family. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. At her request, no services are planned, and cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Porter Hospice.
